Martin Prlic

On a hot summer day, sometimes during the 70s, I was born somewhere in the Austrian Alps. As soon as I could walk and talk I got dragged into the kindergarten, where I realized that I wanted to become a biologist.

Once the other kids found out, they made fun of me, hence I changed my mind: I wanted to become a professional soccer player. I pursued my soccer career in the following years with great intensity until puberty kicked in and everyone, but me, started to become taller. Being a head smaller than everyone else and lacking a mustache, I had no choice, and made a career change: computer geek! This worked fairly well for a while until I got up from the computer one day and accidentally looked in the mirror. There I was, two heads taller than what I remembered, long hair and traces of a beard. It was time to abandon the computer, graduate from high-school, to get a life… and contacts.

To make a long story short, I got contacts, traveled around the world, moved to Salzburg and enrolled as a Genetics major, I moved to Minneapolis for a year and returned to Salzburg again, where I got my Master's in 1999. Now I am back in Minneapolis, trying to get my Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota - may the force be with me.
